How to drag/drop files into SketchBook Motion

With the introduction of iOS 11, we’ve leveraged Apple’s drag and drop feature. Using the Apple dock and Files app, you can drag and drop PNG, JPEG, PSD, and SketchBook TIFF files from available locations, such as iCloud Drive.

If you would like to use images from Photos and drag and drop them into scenes, with Photos and the Files app open, navigate to iCloud Drive, then drag and drop images from Photos onto iCloud Drive.

There are two places where these files can be dropped, the canvas and Gallery. The location will determine whether a scene is created and if layers are flattened. The only file type that can retain its layers is a SketchBook TIFF. See the sections below for each outcome.

Dragging images into the canvas

Creates one layer and adds it to your scene.

  1. With Motion open, access the Apple dock and select the Files app. This opens the Browser along the side.
  2. Select the image you want from the supported image formats (PNG, JPEG, PSD, or SketchBook TIFF).
  3. When you find the image you want, drag and drop it into the Motion canvas.

If the image is a SketchBook TIFF and has multiple layers, it will be flattened onto one layer.

To drag and drop a SketchBook TIFF and retain its layers, see Dragging SketchBook TIFFs into the Gallery.

Creates a new scene consisting of one layer.

  1. With the Motion Gallery open, access the Apple dock and select the Files app. This opens the Browser along the side.
  2. Browse to find the PNG, JPEG, or PSD image you want.
  3. When you find the image you want, drag and drop it into the Gallery.

To drag and drop a SketchBook TIFF and retain its layers, see Dragging SketchBook TIFFs into the Gallery.
