How to install SketchBook

No matter which version of SketchBook you are about to install, the first and most important step is to check to ensure your machine or device meets the minimum recommended system requirements. Please visit SketchBook: System Requirements to see a list of the latest minimum recommended system requirements.

If you purchase a subscription, please take note of the username and password you select. You’ll need it for accessing your Account Settings.

Installing SketchBook for Desktop

When you install SketchBook and first run the app, you will need to log in. If you choose not to, you will be running the free (limited) version. There are a few place you can visit to download SketchBook.

Installing from the Mac App Store

  1. Create an iTunes account, if you don’t already have one.
  2. On your Mac, tap the App Store icon to launch the Mac App Store.
  3. Search for and select SketchBook.
  4. Tap the GET button, followed by INSTALL APP. You will need to enter the password for your iTunes account for the app to be installed.
  5. Find and open SketchBook. Once you’ve launched the app, you will have two choices. Select one of the following:

7 Day Free Trial – this lets you try all the Pro subscription features of SketchBook free for 7 days. At the end of this period, the app will return to the free (limited) version.

Buy Now – you will see a list of free vs Pro subscription features, along with options to Buy or get the 7 Day Free Trial. Tap Buy. At this point, if you already have an Autodesk account, enter its username and password. If you don’t, tap the CREATE ACCOUNT link and follow the instructions for creating an Autodesk account.

Take note of the username and password you selected. You’ll need it for accessing your Account Settings.

Once you have finished, along the top of the canvas, it should read Pro Subscription or Trial and the number of days you have left. If this isn’t the case, in the menu bar, select My Account > Log in or Sign in, then use the username and password you selected when creating your Autodesk account. If you’re still having issues, contact support.

Installing from sketchbook.com

  1. Go to sketchbook.com.
  2. Tap either Free Trial or Buy. If you select Buy, choose the month or year subscription option.
  3. Click the downloaded file to run and install the app.
  4. When complete, click the SketchBook icon (on your desktop by default) and launch the app.
  5. If you have purchased a subscription, in the SketchBook menu bar, select My Account > Sign in or Log in. Enter the username and password you created when you purchased your subscription.

Installing SketchBook for Mobile

When you install SketchBook and first run the app, you will need to log in. If you choose not to, you will be running the free (limited) version. Follow these instructions for installing SketchBook:

Installing from the App Store

There are two parts to the installation. The first is installing the app, which loads the free (limited) version of SketchBook. Once you’ve done this, you can check out the trial, use the free version, or purchase a subscription. The second goes through how to load the Pro toolset.

Part 1 – Installing the app

  1. From your device, go to the App Store.
  2. Search for and select SketchBook Mobile. Tap GET, then INSTALL. You will need to enter the password for your iTunes account for the app to be installed. 
  3. Tap OPEN. This opens SketchBook and walks you through a demo.

You are in the free (limited) version of SketchBook.

Part 2 – Loading the Pro toolset

  1. To switch to the Pro subscription version, tap  File icon in the SketchBook for mobile version and select Log In.
  2. Swipe up to access the Log In screen. If you already have an Autodesk account, enter its username and password to switch over to the Pro subscription version of the app. If not, continue to step 3.
  3. If you don’t have an Autodesk account, tap the CREATE ACCOUNT link and follow the instructions for creating an Autodesk account. When the log in is complete, you will have two choices. Select one of the following:

BUY FOR … – you will be asked for your App Store password to confirm the purchase of the Pro Tools. This gives you all the Pro Tools in the current release of SketchBook. Please note, this is NOT subscription. Enter your password and tap Buy.

START FREE TRIAL – this lets you try all the Pro subscription features of SketchBook free for 7 days. At the end of this period, the app will return to the free (limited) version.

Now, you will have all the Pro Tools or Pro subscription features. Tap Tools icon (the Tools icon) to check. If there are only 4 tools, log in again or contact support.

  • Android and iOS 9 users will have 9 tools
  • iOS 10 iPhone users will have 10 tools
  • iOS 10 iPad users will see more tools in the toolbar

Installing from the Google Play Store

  1. From your device, go to the Play Store.
  2. Search for and select SketchBook. Tap INSTALL. When it is finished, tap OPEN. You will be asked to allow SketchBook to access your photos. Select OK.
  3. When the log in is complete, you will have two choices. Select one of the following:

BUY FOR … – you will be asked for your App Store password to confirm the purchase of the Pro Tools. This gives you all the Pro Tools in the current release of SketchBook. Please note, this is NOT subscription. Enter your password and tap Buy.

START FREE TRIAL – this lets you try all the Pro subscription features of SketchBook free for 7 days. At the end of this period, the app will return to the free (limited) version.

Now, you will have all the Pro Tools or Pro subscription features. TapTools icon (the Tools icon) to check. You should have 9 tools. If there are only 4 tools, log in again or contact support.

Installing SketchBook for Windows 10

When you install SketchBook and first run the app, you will need to log in. If you choose not to, you will be running the free (limited) version. Follow these instructions for installing SketchBook:

1. Click this link to go to the SketchBook page on the Microsoft Store.

2. Tap Get the app. This launches another window.

If below the Get the app button, it states, This app does not work on your device, then download the desktop version of SketchBook.

For device specifications, tap the What does this work on? link.

3. Tap Install. When the installation is complete, the Install button changes to Open.

4. Click Open.

5. The License and Service Agreement appears. Tap I agree to launch SketchBook and start sketching.

When you first run the app, don’t forget to log in; otherwise, you will be running the free (limited) version. See How to log into SketchBook for how to do this.
